Ah a lot of people saying 'British' - but do you mean Lahndan, Liverpewwwel, Brizzle, Naaahrech, Beermingg-ham, Glasgae, Aberr-din, Caerdydd... I mean which are you referring to? Or, as I suspect, BBC2?

As for 'British' accents - well there's no such thing as a British accent - you do know that Britain is made up of different countries with different languages right? Most British people speak English as their main language, but Welsh is still in general use in Wales; Scottish Gaelic is rarer, but both of these are very different from English and have very different origins - and as you would expect from countries with vastly different languages, people from Wales and Scotland have accents that are distinct and different from any English accent. English accents vary considerably both in pronunciation and vocabulary. Words are used in Yorkshire that are of Danish or Norse origin, due to the Viking influence in that region. Many Yorkshire words are not used in London, and I would have trouble understanding someone speaking in a true Yorkshire dialect (whereas a Dane from the Jutland region would have much less trouble!) The difference between Northern and Southern accents and dialects is huge - put someone from Newcastle next to someone from Yeovil and you'd have trouble working out that they were speaking the same language if you weren't familiar with the accents. If you get your idea of an English accent from say BBC radio or news broadcasts - well not many people actually talk like that. It's very well enunciated, slow and clear, because it's intended to be easily understood. You certainly wouldn't hear most people in any city talk like that. For example, native Londoners speak very very fast, running their words together, and dropping out letters. A Londoner saying the phrase "alright mate, how are you doing?" (which is in itself a peculiarly London greeting) would sound like this: "awri'ma'e, aahyadoin?" Or if they were using slang might be more inclined to say: "awri'me-ole-china, aahyadoin?"
