Actually the odds are much much better than learning 8 topics out of 11.
If things haven't changed since my days, the marking system is seriously biased to getting a few questions complete. e.g. if you only answer 4 questions, but get these perfect you will score much much higher than 50% (probably around 60%). So the key is to learn 6 or so topics really really well (cover the remaining five barely) and asssuming law of large numbers, 4 of these should come up and so you'll pass Of course, you'd be really screwed if only 1 out of your 6 expert topics came up.. |

oops - typo or a few loose screws in my head, take your pick. The worse that could happen if you learn 6 topics is that only 3 out of your 6 expert topics come up. If so, you can still pass, assuming you can get near perfect answers to these 3..

Geez, what are you complaining for Avatar - those are the EASY 1st year exams. Things get much rougher in 3rd and 4th year when the design and thesis projects become "open ended", and you start pushing to try and get 1st class honours.
Nothing i have hitherto experienced matches the nonsensical lack of practicality of "Advanced Numerical Methods" in 3rd year.

Its at this point that I thank God for political science - whilst I have to learn my economics work I can probably blag the politics completely. I probably won't get a good mark for it, but all I need to do is pass. So I should be ok.
