Well, if you really want an extrememly useful piece of literature on the subject, I recommend a book called 'DEAD OR ALIVE' by Geoff Thompson.

*Hugs* Cloudy . Glad its all good.
One thing I can only suggest... When I'm on streets of NYC, Brooklyn, I'm in survival mode... After a few incidents I just kind of understood that its best to have a gun with you at all times , my suggestion to all that live in dangerous areas...

Everyone is bringing up some very good points! This is what I was hoping we could do. Share experiences and pointers. I like to think it could help someone here or a loved one someday.

It is always good to know some, even basic, self defence. Martial arts are VERY good for this, as 1. They are legal everywhere, and 2. You always have the correct weapons with you- your hands and feet.
Also, alot of self defence programs teach you how to get out of certain situations, such as being grabbed from behind. The tactics they teach you will usually, if not always, take advantage of weaknesses in a certain position, and it will be impossible for the assailent to have you unable to escape, as guarding against the tacticts would severly weaken the hold. If you know them, then you will be able to escape almost any encounter. |

Indeed it doesnt... But self defence doesnt always work, as a matter of fact it really rarely works, espesially on someone who is new to fighting. Trust me, its a whole different thing when you're actually learning self defence moves in a school with your teacher and a nice atmosphere, and when you're on a dark corner of a city street getting attacked by some dangerously looking thugs, its a rush, shock and a whole different experience, I knew people who were really great at my Martial art school but when it came to the real thing they totally lost control, confidence, and any desire to even fight. Thats is exactly where the gun comes in. Besides it doesnt have to big a big gun, any kind will work . Most of the robbers and thugs themselves are naturally wimps, they will run away even if you point an empty gun at them hehe .

Self defense sure doesn't require a run until the other person has a weapon or can easily overpower you. It's just that a person who is taught to use a gun in self defense is better prepared "for anything" A person who has studied self defense for many years may be fine, but that just not practical.
