My sister gave me some fire poi for Christmas a couple of years back. Damn hard to use. Kept smacking myself in the head. I havn't built up the skill to actually burn them yet, I just occasionally practice with them unlit. I had a fire staff once too (basically a metal pole with strips of cloth wrapped around each tip that you soak in fuel and ignite) which was much easier to use. I sold it to a friend though after I eventually lost interest in fire dancing. All things considered though fire dancing is a really fun and relatively inexpensive hobby once you've got yourself all of your respective equipment. Good, clean fuel can sometimes be quite pricey to come by, so I mainly used kerosene, which is rather 'dirty' in terms of the fumes it gives off and its grimy after-burn residue. So long as you keep the flames 'moving' relatively quickly you're pretty safe from being seriously burned. It's only when you hold the staff or poi still that the flames can catch on your clothes or singe your skin.
