However, I am afraid I am unable to help you about the Umlaute. As I am posting from Germany, I, of course, have a German keyboard which has separate keys reserved for the Umlaute. I do know that there are special shortcut key combinations for the Unlaute for use on a keyboard without those special keys, but I don't know them.

May I ask where exactly in the vicinity of Cologne your cousin lives ?

I believe an Umlaut is attained by pressing Alt + 129 (lower case) or Alt + 154 (Capitalised.)

Sorry I took so long to reply - I went to bed after my previous post.

Anyway, as I found out from my mum, I was wrong. My cousin actually lives in the vicinity of Koblenz, in Rhineland-Pfalz. Do you know it? He actually lives in a tiny village called Hinterwald, just behind the town.

PS: Thank you very much for those commands, LennonCook! I'll save those in case I ever have to type in German!
