Not sure about IWD2 but in 3e DnD they are quite usefull
they are the only blade that can be used by a druid without suffering from penalties.

The Scmitar for fighters could be usefull because it has a critrange from 18-20 instead of the 19-20 critrange a longsword has. That doesnt seem like a lot, but if you have a keen longsword with improved critical, you have a crit range of 15-20, with a keen scmitar and improved creitical feat, you have a critrange of 12-20 meaning you have a critical hit almost half of the times!
i dunno if that's also true in IWD2 though

I absolutely agree with you here. In NWN, the 12-20 critical hit range is awesome, although you are not guaranteed to get critical hits on these rolls. This is mainly due to the threat roll which is rolled after the 12-20 roll to determine if the hit is critical or not, and only if that hits is the damage multiplied according to the weapon type. If the threat roll misses, then the attack deals normal damage.

In IWD2 (bit rusty, not played for a while), the critical ranges are not the same. Taking the feat "Improved Critical" does not actually double the chance of a critical hit, but merely provides an additional 5% chance to score one (or an additional +1 on the D20). AFAIK, this also applies to keen weapons. Lets therefore assume that we have a keen long sword. Default critical range is 19-20. Keen makes this 18-20 (not 17-20 a la NWN) and improved critical makes this 17-20 (not 15-20 a la NWN). The upside to this is that IWD2 doesn't use a threat roll, therefore (in this particular case) if you roll a 17, 18, 19 or 20, you get a critical hit, no question.
