Thanks Moose!

More responces please? So far two votes for the card first!

If YOU have to choose more ram or the new card(based on upgrading MY system), which do you think is most important and why?

Windows O.S.'s always benifit from more ram..

Depending on the type of ram in you box ( rambus is proprietary crap and is expensive as hell ) if you had like ddr pc2700 you could get 512 chip for $100.00 and $200 for the card That would be the same as 4600 and increase your overall performance.
A switch from rambus to DDR would involve changing his whole mainboard, something I doubt he wants. I do agree that rambus is overpriced proprietary crap.

Ronn you do mean RDRAM and not DDR, correct?

Thanks Hesperex!

The new video card is ruling the votes so far.

Anyone think the additional RAM is more important to upgrade first?

I'd go with the 4200. You'll see minimal impact from adding more RAM at the level you're at.

Rambus may be proprietary crap , but it has the fastest front side bus speed of anything out there. Rember , your system is only as fast as your slowest part. What good is a GeForce 4 and a 2 gig processor when your ram will slow both of them down? Untill they can get SD or DDR ram up to 800 mhz I will be sticking with the proprietary crap.

Don't go with the nVidia, go with a new ATI Radeon. I have an nVidia GeF 2 Ultra, and it's a great card, but the 2d is so-so. You will have to live with your new video for eveything, and I suggest getting a good all-around card. The Radeon is on the same level as the nVidia's at 3d, but has superior 2d, AND is substantially cheaper. And an additional 256 should cost you not $100 but more like 85. Look on pricewatch.com. I recommend newegg.com for parts and superior service. Its not the cheapest, but near the bottom.

Hiya Ronn

IMO you should go for the 4200. Cloudy just got a 4600 and it ROCKS!!! But it was about $400!!! I've since found out that the 4600 is just an overclocked 4200. EVERYTHING ELSE IS THE SAME!! It's a snap to overclock, literally a matter of a few clicks, and presto, have yourself a 4600 for just over $150. Although, do be sure to pick up a case exhaust fan, or a higher quality on-board fan for the card. The fan that's on the card wont handle the extra heat.

HERE is a page that talks about how to overclock the 4200. Found it on a quick www.alltheweb.com search. I'm sure you can find TONS more.

PS: ANY system can benefit from more RAM. But 256 is a good amount, even for XP(a major RAM hog, I know, I'm only running 192 Megs and it's kinda sucky). Anyhew, I would recommend going for the 512 Megs when you can, and getting the video card upgrade for now. That should give you a noticable boost in performance. Adding the extra RAM later is just icing on the cake. Although, dont wait *too* long, you never know when RAM prices will skyrocket again.
