about the whole Orient issue:
orient is from Latin "oriens" (present participle active of "orior" = rise) meaning "rising" short for "Land of the Rising Sun" meaning "Land in that direction where the sun usually rises" meaning "Land in the East". It was commonly used for the uncharted and widely unknown territories east of Europe - as well for the middle East as for the Far East. Also there was no other contact between the Far East and Europe than through Arab merchants for a long time. BTW sometimes the western hemisphere is still referred to as "occident" (from Latin "occido" = die, perish) as in "Land in that direction where the sun usually vanishes"
