Set your HDD that is having the problems up in the other computer. Set it up *alone* to start with, and see if you still have problems. If you do, set it up as a slave to the other one, and format it. Put it back into the computer it came from, reinstall Windows (again). See if that helps. If that fails, try getting a program which can do a low-level format, and do one. If you get the same problems, it isn't a dying/diseased HDD. Try testing your processer in the other machine, then the RAM, then the video card. Once you've found what bit's dying, replace it, and it should fix it. usually when fatal errors occur, it is a hardware prob... is your fan still working, nothing burned up, etc.
hope you find it soon |

Fans - open the case and start the pc - you'll be able to see if any fans aren't working.
RAM - use the memory tester that someone posted a link to earlier in the thread (my pc had identical symptoms and it turned out to be faulty RAM) HDD - try it in your other PC

I just want to put in another recommendation for checking the RAM. I just recently reloaded my system after having some intermittent (and difficult to troubleshoot) problems that turned out to be due to bad RAM. You definitely need to run something like the test listed above. The standard memory check that runs when you boot your PC is virtually useless.

I only have one fan, and it's the one in the power supply.
As for what the speedfan told me, it look like bad news. Fan is at 0 rpm and Temp -119c And in the S.M.A.R.T. page, the hard drive has about 80% fitness and 100% performance. About the RAM test... my floppy disk reader is broken so it make things a little harder. I'll burn the cd version when I get the time. The problem with testing my hard drive in another computer is that the bugs don't happen all the time. Right now, I'm having no bugs, my computer is running perfectly except for the explorer crash I got a few minutes ago. I guess I'll test this last. If the fan in the powersupply is not spinning that could cause lots of problems. Replace the power supply ASAP.

Come to think of it, you need at least 2 fans. One is on top of the CPU and the other one is in the power supply unit. Also, if you are using the latest ATX casing, you could buy additional fans to mount inside. This will improve the circulation and heat ventilation. If your problem is caused by overheating, you can give this a try.
