We're really busy at work, ReGin. Attalus and I saw 42 patients this morning, and we were only open until noon (well, 12:30) Everybody but us has the influenza or some other upper respiratory ailment, and the nurses were giving injections like crazy. I saw one poor little tyke with a temperature of 38 degrees Celsius, and was sponging her down in the sink, she was screaming and crying, and THEN, we had to give her a shot. We have been doing yard work to unwind. As I said earlier,it's a beautiful day, not a cloud in the sky, and quite warm.

Cloudy, how's everything in the Northeast?

Well, good thing you'renot sick
But I could never be a doctor..I don't perfrom well under pressure
I have a friend who is a doctor, and she works 8-18 everyday (except weekends, of course ) because she can't leave any patients..
Normally, she should leave at 17 butshe always stays longer to check on everyone..
Still, she thinks she'll soon be like the much older male doctors who doesn't even look at the patients anymore..
She says you can't be a doctor in Sweden and care!
Too bad really, but it's true..

Oh, that's the benefit of not working in a hospital any more, like us. We're a rural health clinic, so we set out own hours. Attalus says that he was on call for 20 years, and by golly he's going to be his own man and have time to do what he wants to do. We don't even carry beepers. All our after hours emergencies are handled by the hospital, nearby. Much better family life. We listen to the complaints of our over-worked colleagues and just smile.

That sounds really nice, Gal..
But I imagine it must be hard to just close for the day, and tell all the patients to go the hospital?
Or am I completely out of track here

Everyone, if you haven't already, please go read Harkoliar's "What goes around..." thread. It's very uplifting.

Well, for one thing, we live in a small town, and everybody knows where we live. But, we've pretty well "trained" them to our hours, and we are the ONLY doctor's office open on the weekend in our county (about 100kmx100km). So, they know to call the Emergency Department with after-hours emergencies, just as they would if their doctor was off call. For questions, etc., they call us at home. But, surprisingly, not very often. We don't really care for terribly ill patients, they all have doctors in Terrell, Tyler, or Dallas. We are just for the little daily emergencies, like colds, etc., and for treatment of chronic ailments (diabetes, hypertension)

Good eve to you all, my friends

*pulls up a chair and settles himself in a nice quiet corner of the cafe, feeling distinctly lonely and rahter neglected as he sips his drink carefully - alone and despondant*
