I like to go into a forest and encounter animals. Sure, there can be other things, but there should be animals. The exotic beasties can be in the dungeons and haunted castles and other exotic locations.

Yeah - just like when looking at encounter tables, you have the common, uncommon, rare, and very rare encounters... for example, for a cold wilderness forest, we have:

Common: brown bear, giant centipede, mammoth, orc, wolf, etc.
Uncommon: bandit, white dragon, wood elf, kobold, owl, giant rat, stirge, troll, etc.
Rare: northern bear, mountain dwarf, hill dwarf, goblin, giant lynx, giant scorpion, shadow, treant, dire wolf, worg, etc.
Very Rare: giant bat, gold dragon, gargoyle, ghost, fire giant, frost giant, gnome, greenhag, phoenix, ice troll, vampire, winter wolf, zombie, etc.

Lots of animals, to be sure! Some humanoids and demihumans rolled in as well, though (gotta make a better bandit one of these days). Exotic beasties are around, but are quite rare in general; more can be found in the depths of a dungeon

As a designer, the depths of a dungeon are where I like to place the mroe exotic beasties.

Well... If you want to be anal and follow AD&D rules strictly (anal -> me!), then certain exotic monsters are only available in the wilderness and not in dungeons (achaierai, ki-rin, phoenix, etc.) Still, more exotics can be found in dungeons than anywhere else (most devils, for example).

Of course, as DM, you are free to break the rules as you please

I would probably never stick a phoenix in a dungeon, but there are other exotic locales that I would consider using where one could appear. Especially since I'm working on a planes spanning game (the Silver Blades game as discussed elsewhere on these boards).

Ha ha - well, they can appear in various other planes, that is for sure And then someone can just summon one...

If we can get summoning to work in DC, I will be extremely happy, that and requiring that magic weapons be needed to hit...

Here's a couple of scenarios where summoning would be useful (I mean other than summoning something to fight beside or against the players).
1) A mounted enemy gets up after the mount falls and the combat continues

2) I dealt with this twice in real life recently, I squashed a spider only to have what looked like hundreds of baby spiders scattering out from the body.

3) If you had instead of just your party control of platoons from an army, you could split these platoons into smaller units for more attacks (but less strength)

4) In the book of the first 10 dungeons and dragons boxset modules that I occasionally talk about, a creature had some weapons known as "daggers of sorcery" that when thrown at someone would hit or miss, but regardless would animate and attack each round after until struck for over 4 points of damage.

And these are just some of the many reasons we need to figure out some way of summoning

It's all really up to Tarlanon and LurchBrick (if he's still around)...though I do wish Richard would get interested again and help us finish this thing off.

Yeah, would be nice! Summoning would add a lot of nice spells to the roster, too.

As for Richard... Maybe you could get him to just peek around the forums and see what everyone else is up to (Might get the juices flowing, if we're lucky, and if we could only just get him to come here...)
