This is a link to the ImMigration and Nationality Directorate branch of the Home Office.

It shows just one way that immigrants can become British Citizens. There are other more complicated ways which involve having a parent or grandparent who are British and also gaining citizenship through ‘Crown Service’.

My friend is German, she has a German passport, she's lived in england since she was five, and she's considered a british citizen now, after her father joined the british army.

Well, technically esther is a Euroasian, but hey, who's counting all the small details?

Thanks Moni, loaded up ToB and died so I'm sulking

Kyoto was just another gun at our forehead placed there by the third world. I'm glad Dubya didn't sign it.
And KHaN's will cancel hers. Its not like I am alone in the world LOL.

K T Ong - Your right in saying that we imposed "Pax Britannica" on the vast majority of the human race and we did it for a long time, but not any longer and most probably never again. I did not mean to insinuate that British makes you better than everyone else so if that’s the impression I gave then I apologise.

Donut - I wasn't referring to been English atall, that is something else again by my thinking, something also very dear to me aswell. For instance the people of Gibraltar have been particularly British of late ..and who can blame them with our Labour government talking of shared sovereignty with Spain ...point is the Gibraltarians are surely not English but they are British ...if you see my meaning. (I am also aware that there are a lot on English people in Gibraltar before someone points it out)

Anyway we are wandering off topic in this thread, interesting as this particular discussion is I don’t want to start running a second topic on someone else’s thread.

Hmmm. . . I have intentionally remained silent in this thread. . .But. . our beloved deep fried fluffy doughy confection has piqued my interest and I have decided to surface from the shadowy recesses of the electronic ethereal realms.
Sir Donut, I would be quite interested in reading, in excruciating detail, just what might be entailed in "Service to the Crown". And please don't leave anything out, including potential involvement with MI6, black ops and wet work
Hmm, those last categories are probably classified so Donut wont be able to comment on them. Mores the pity

Relic, as you correctly surmise, my previous employment precludes me from commenting on the security services.

You don’t know the can of worms you have opened. British nationality law is extremely complex. Okay then.

People born outside the UK can claim British Citizenship if their father is a British Citizen born in the UK and the child was born after the marriage. Or – if their Mother is a British Citizen, born in the UK (whether married or not ).

These children will not be able to pass on their British Citizenship automatically to any of their offspring if said offspring are born outside of the UK.

UNLESS – at the time of their birth either of their parents are British Citizens and are in Crown Service i.e directly employed by the British Government or the EU. In that case they are considered British by descent and may pass on citizenship.

If the parents of the child do not qualify on these grounds, an application to register the child as a British Citizen can be made to the Home Office through the British Embassy.
