Ugh - watched Dutch news ten minutes ago; it seems even worse photographs have surfaced now (they were shown on tv), of American soldiers posing with the mutilated corpse of a prisoner that was "reportedly" tortured to death, with the soldiers sticking their thumbs in the air in approval, and a big smile on their faces.
Will post more on the subject as soon as I've located a news site with said story.

More Photos Surface - Soldiers Shown Giving Thumbs-Up Sign By Body of Dead Iraqi Prisoner

May 19, 2004— ABCNEWS has obtained two new photos taken at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq showing Spc. Charles Graner and Spc. Sabrina Harman posing over the body of a detainee who was allegedly beaten to death by CIA or civilian interrogators in the prison's showers. The detainee's name was Manadel al-Jamadi.

According to testimony from Spc. Jason Kenner, obtained by ABCNEWS, the man was brought to the prison by U.S. Navy SEALs in good health. Kenner said he saw extensive bruising on the detainee's body when he was brought out of the showers, dead.

Kenner says the body was packed in ice during a "battle" between CIA and military interrogators over who should dispose of the body.

The Justice Department opened an investigation into this death and four others today following a referral from the CIA.

The photos were taken by Staff Sgt. Ivan "Chip" Frederick , who in e-mails to his family has asked why the people responsible for the prisoner's death were not being prosecuted in the same manner that he is.

Frederick, Graner, and Harman are among six reservists from the 372nd Military Police Company who are facing charges in the abuse scandal.

A lawyer for Graner, Guy Womack, told ABCNEWS the photo of his client represents inappropriate "gallows humor." Womack questioned why U.S. officials have not opened a criminal investigation into alleged murders at Abu Ghraib, while the investigation of his client has proceeded at a rapid pace.

A seventh member of the unit, Spc. Jeremy Sivits, pleaded guilty today to four counts for taking pictures of naked Iraqi prisoners being humiliated.

Sivits received the maximum penalty of a year in prison and a bad conduct discharge.

No desire to see more photos, thanks.

It is interesting to note that the intelligence personnel have not been prosecuted or charged yet. Their time will come, I am sure.

Glad to see our media has the world diverted from the real situation at hand. Reminds me of the Clinton era, some story about him, and wham, something else somewhere pops up.

As of 16 May 2004 we have lost 34 service members this month. If we were to use 'special interrogation' procedures without the media how many lives could we save. How many IEDs and ambushes could we thwart?

From the Sydney Morning Herald:

New claims of abuse
May 21, 2004 - 5:24PM

Washington: Iraqi prisoners said they were sexually fondled by female soldiers and forced to eat food from toilets in documents described by the Washington Post today.

The documents include hundreds of new photos and short video clips of torture by the US military at Baghdad's notorious Abu Ghraib jail, which has been at the centre of the prisoner abuse scandal.

The newspaper said the testimony of abuse obtained from 13 Iraqi detainees, as well as hundreds of photographs and short digital video clips, are part of evidence gathered by army investigators for the courts martial in Iraq of seven US soldiers charged with abusing detainees.

A US Defence Department spokesman told the newspaper that the description of the photos and video clips seemed to match that of the graphic material shown privately to US lawmakers earlier this month.

The photographs and videos - which the newspaper said did not shed light on who directed the abuse at Abu Ghraib - show detainees cowering before unmuzzled dogs, being forced to masturbate, being hit or sexually assaulted by guards, and threatened with a shotgun.

Six photographs (warning, they're graphic) published on the Washington Post website include one of a naked prisoner smeared with what appears to be excrement being forced to walk a straight line in front of a baton-wielding guard.

Another image shows a detainee wearing an orange prison uniform kneeling with his hands apparently tied behind his back as a large black dog, restrained with both hands by his handler, snarls only a metre or so from his face.

In another picture, a hooded prisoner in his underwear stands on two boxes with his back to a wall, bending over grasping the back of his knees.

Yet another shows a prison guard apparently threatening to punch in the head one of several detainees bound hand and foot on the floor.

The sworn statements given to US army investigators by the detainees between January 16 and 21 seem to corroborate some of the images, said newspaper reported.

In the 65 pages of testimony, the detainees describe being ridden like animals by prison guards, sexually fondled by female soldiers and forced to retrieve food from their toilets.

"They forced us to walk like dogs on our hands and knees," said Hiadar Sabar Abed Miktub al-Aboodi, detainee No 13077.

"And we had to bark like a dog, and if we didn't do that they started hitting us hard on our face and chest with no mercy.

"After that, they took us to our cells, took the mattresses out and dropped water on the floor and they made us sleep on our stomachs on the floor with the bags on our head and they took pictures of everything."

Many of the detainees said they were forced to strip naked on their arrival at the prison and remained naked for several days at a time, with some forced to wear women's underwear.

One detainee said he witnessed a US Army translator having sex with a boy of between 15 and 18 at the prison, who shouted in pain.

Another detainee described how US Army Specialist Charles Graner and other US soldiers sodomised another detainee with a phosphoric light.

The detainees provided the names of three US soldiers, two of whom - Graner and Sergeant Javal Davis - are among the US soldiers facing courts martial for the abuse of prisoners.

Yet another detainee said he was kept naked for five days, forced to kneel for four hours with a hood over his head, badly beaten, forced to crawl as he was spat upon, and finally sodomised by US soldiers with a nightstick.

Another detainee described how US soldiers forced him and several other detainees to form a human pyramid.

Al-Zayiadi described how he was forced to stand on a box wearing only a blanket and a hood with electric wires sticking out of his body, in what has become one of the iconic photographs of the prisoner abuse scandal.

Graner, he said, "brought a box of food and he made me stand on it with no clothing, except a blanket. Then a tall black soldier came and put electrical wires on my fingers and toes and on my penis, and I had a bag over my head."

The latest abuse claims came as some Iraqis detained at Abu Ghraib were released.

Yesterday, a proposal to destroy the jail moved forward as US lawmakers voted to include it in a defence spending bill.

The measure would demolish Abu Ghraib and build a modern detention facility in its place.

"This prison was a symbol of terrorism under Saddam, and it was an institution that the Iraqi people despised," Representative Curt Weldon, a Republican, said.

The abuse that happened at the prison "really created a bad perception in Iraq," Weldon said.

"So my feeling is, tear it down. Get rid of it Not just because of what a few soldiers did, but because of also because of what that symbol meant to Saddam, and show the Iraqi people, 'Hey, we don't want that kind of torture any more'."

I agree with you Timber, and again I ask the question - why the @#$% would you EVER take pictures of this shit. Eh?
