Yank Bashing - Page 11

Sorry Antonius...I just came back to this thread and noticed the message I posted was under yours.
The pppppppppppbbbbbbbbbbbbththththththththth was for all the bashing before your post. I don't understand the idea behind bashing. I know this thread is supposed to be an attempt at humor. I have nothing against that. My Granfolks came from Scotland in 1921. I chat regularly in a scottish chat room and have been called yank and bashed a bit. It always angers me. Granpa was shot three times and gased
twice in WWI fighting in France for the English. But because he came here he is considered by some to be a traitor? He wanted a better life for his children and did what he had to do. I am glad he did.
I do have a question though...
Does being called a European bother folks there as much as being called Yank bothers some of us? I my experiance being called yank is akin to a racial slur.
As if I should be sorry I was born here.

"Yank" is a pretty standard term over here, not offensive in any way (that I know of, at least). I thought your post was about the funniest one

It doesn't offend me to get called a European, as some of your countrymen couldn't even identify my nation on a map. For the record, I'm not European, I'm not a Brit, I'm English.

It was supposed to be fun (I didn't want a war), but it's interesting to see people disavowing national stereotypes, or conversely, matching them completely. It's nice to know what my country means to the rest of the world (apart from BSE and Foot & Mouth).

Thanks Antonius... I appreciate the clarification. Over here all of Europe, GB included, gets lumped under the moniker European. Mostly used by the press...obviously a plot by the evil media to lump us all into nice tidy boxes with labels on them. Because they use that alot of folks assume, as many americans do, that it is what folks from your corner of the world want to be called. Thank gawd I do not watch the mews any more than absolutley necessary. As far as not a strong national identity consider that your ancestors are Celts. Since at one time most of europe was under their sway. But, as Rome and the other ancient powers gained in power they were forced farther and farther from the center(?) of the world to the outter areas. Could you not then be concidered a Celt?

Most of the ballots were counted. The system is that each state gets a certain number of "electoral" votes. The number of votes per state is determined by population. Well,

I am an European. I am obviously also a German. I am a wholehearted Rhinelander and citizen of Cologne as well. But that might be a difference to the Americans. They have a nationality and may also identify themselves with their region and city, but there is no supranational entity they could possibly feel like belonging to - apart from being a "citizen of the world", but true cosmopolitans are a rare species.

But there is also something Germans and Americans or Australians have in common when it comes to their identity: their collectively "felt" national identity is the one in their passport, something which is not true for large segments of the populations of Catalunya, The Basque Country, possibly even Scotland and ... well the list of regions I could add here is almost endless. So obviously that correlation is not as normal as it might appear to us.

The strange thing about collective identities is though, that they are at the same time highly subjective, in that they reguire the individual's choice to belong, and forced upon us by the opinions of our environment on what we are.

Anyway ...

But one more thing, Rikard, I couldn't disagree more with you: it is up to debate if the "Yanks" did more or less good since they decided that they didn't want to be "oversea Brits" anymore, but beyond any doubt producing CB has been their the greatest deed ever - imagine: they had to shut her up to install the batteries and the tongue

! - their invaluable gift to the world !
