Ah, leave it to Johnny to deflate the debate. Darn it, MagiK has already made all my points except one, and Morgeruat made that. Let me just say that Churchill considered it of paramount importance to involve the US in the war, not only for troops (we had little in those days) but for supplies and manufacturing plant. Donut is quite right in his post, I have an excellent book called Hard Bargain by Robert Shogan, that makes many of those points. As for the Battle of Britain, I feel that the RAF won that one on its own, though major errors by Goering (Making the fighters fly "close escort" to the bombers, failing to disable the Chain Home radar stations, and most of all, the failure to develop a decent heavy bomber, though that was more Udet's fault.)

Good point Attalus, Germany mostly lost the battle of Britain because of stupid mistakes and arrogance of Goering. In the beginning they bombed British airfields non stop, but somehow they decided to stop that and attack cities instead, giving the RAF time to breathe and restore their strength. Big, big mistake.
