I heard it through the Grapevine

It has been done by Elton John, Average White band and probably a couple of other people.

A pity you didn't mention the person who made it famous and did it the best. Does anyone know who I'm referring to?

BTW, I didn't know those people you mentioned had done versions of the song.

Wonderboy - Tenacious D. I think...

I'll post a replacement now, if my answer turns out to be wrong then nobody is allowed to guess this!

Every time you crave for me - I'm there,
Every thing you hunger for - I'll share,
And I will be quietly standing by,
While slowly I am dying inside,

Manchild by the Eels?

Mkay, here's my next one then:

And it all breaks down at the first rehearsal
got the muse in my head she's universal
spinnin' me round she's coming over me
Does his makeup in his room douse himself with
cheap perfume eyeholes in a paper bag greatest
lay I ever had kind of guy who mates for life
gotta help him find a wife we're a couple
when our bodies double

</font>
Correct, and yours is Nancy Boy by Placebo.

Try this one, its a bit weird but the album it comes from is very famous:

I always said he'd come to now good Worm your honour,
If I'd had my way I could have flayed him into shape!
But my hands were tied,
The bleeding hearts and artists let him get away with murder,
Let me hammer him today!

And I want the "character" from the album who sings it as well. Not the actual member of the band, but the character from the storyline. Its easy if you know the song...

The Trial by Pink Floyd
I love that song.
But for the love of me I can not think of the "Character"

Correct!

I am actually quite surprised you can;t get the character though, if you have heard the song (which I assume you have if you love it ). To help all those out there with doubts on this one the characters voiced in the song, all by David Gilmour I believe, are the Prosecutor, The Judge Worm, Pink Floyd himself, Pinks old schoolmaster, Pinks mother, and Pinks wife. Take a pick from all of those if you like.

EDIT - just as a further clue its quite important to notice the use of the word "hammer" in the persons quote. The hammer is a central theme of this character throughout the album and film.
