Steal one languages grammar, and then replace that languages words with combination words from several other languages.

Examples: Tolkien based one elven tongue (or more) on Finnish, another was very influenced by Welsh, the grammar structure, I'm not sure exactly how he concocted.

Thanks everyone. I think I'll mix up the suggestions and take everyone's advice. It's all good. But I think I'll write the basic story first then add in the bits with the language after, working out the language during the time when I'm writing but not actually writing.

On a related note, that I just remembered, I'm looking for good names for my story, but I'm not great at coming up with them. If anyone on Ironworks has made up their username name and wouldn't mind me using it, drop me a line and you can be in the story! You never know, you may be the next big fantasy character!

the important trick is to use lots of redundant 's for no apparent reason, like " F'sarg J'Jaro' 'jivi'ti'ti Li'l V'rix ! "

Or even better, put in odd symbols like the german double S : β

other symbols I recomend: ∞ ± √ ★ ¤ ¥ … Й ∴ ∵

So you could be like: "Hi v'vriv'r've'faf'fef'afs'wswweeewee how're you doing today?

"I'ntai'v'd'ies'ska'ji ∴ !"

"Wow that's really intersesting... go on..."

"∞ Cubed oife' f's'a jijia'ndaurka'rnka funka!"

"Й ! and how'd you pronounce that?"

"fg'g'dse'f34'r's'fw' ★! df3' fdsf'fsd'd !!"

"... ripping out your tounge and slipping it around your head 8 and a half times, very interesting..."

" P'oiut!"

" So long v'vriv'r've'faf'fef'afs'wswweeewee!"

or better: Use numbers in place of vowels, 1 = A 2 = E 3 = I 4 = O 5 = U

Hence:

4nc2 5p4n 1 t3m2 ...

I always find name generators useful!
here is one at download.com. Pick the name mage, it's the best one.
