My son got a computer and a Lynksys cable router for Christmas. We share the internet connection, home network, and play games together and with friends just fine.

It's GREAT!!!!!!!!

I run my computer DMZ, so I can host games, Roger Wilco, etc., but one problem is that my friends have to connect to my games by my IP address. They don't see my game listed on the gameserver itself?

Another problem is that I can't use Yahoo! Messenger to send or receive files anymore. I know the router acts as a hardware firewall, but beyond running DMZ, what should I do?

All help will be greatly appreciated! If I need to list more info, tell me what you need to know.

Thanks in advance!

I´ve said it before and I´ll say it again. Registry, registry, registry! Stop toying with it Ronn. Naah, sorry about that. I have no idea how routers work and neither does the hubby. Well he´s good at destroying our internet connection lol. Try opening up port 5050 in your firewall. That´s the port Yahoo! Messenger uses.

Check this thread, and scroll to the bottom, it's a linksys *41 also. You need to turn OFF DMZ. This allows anyone to maybe hack into your PC. turn it off, and just open the ports listed in my screenshot.

Let me know if you get it fixed!!

Willow, at your prompting, I've become a registry editing/cleaning fool using toys like jv16 and SpyBot...lol.

I don't have any trouble connecting to Yahoo! Messenger or entering chatrooms, just using voice chat and swapping files. Since I'm DMZ, I think all my ports are open as if I had no firewall, so I'm curious what else I can do. The voice chat I can do without, but I'd really like to be able to share files again.

I'd like for my hosted games to show up online, too. Maybe Ziroc can tell me how to make that happen, since he uses the same kind of router....

EDIT - I see Ziroc replied while I was posting. Thanks Z!

Is DMZ ok, if I'm still using ZoneAlarm Pro? We play several different games and use programs like Roger Wilco, "XYZ" Messenger, etc., and I've been too lazy to find all the settings...lol.
I wouldn't use it.. Lock your PC up tight, and just open the ports needed. It's MUCH more safe. DMZ is ok if you are on an intranet (doesn't go outside the home to the internet).
