Looking at pictures of naked women or men posed or involved in sexual acts is not going to effect what that individual does in a positive sense upon their release from prison, so it is not "better than nothing." If sexual predators could have all their desires quenched by magazines, there would be no sex crimes. Pornography is not a tool to prevent sex crimes although it has been used as a tool to increase sexual desire as Cloudy's post suggests.

Just a brief point, it has been raised by Eisen and refuted by MagiK but I'm afraid you're actually wrong on this point MagiK - at least with reference to the UK. Nilsson was fighting for the right to have pornography sent to him. He was not fighting for the right for the state to provide him with it. As far as I am aware inmates in the UK are allowed most things to be sent to them if they pay for them or their families pay for them. Prisoners earn money working in the prison or, if you are Lord Archer, in a theatre in Lincoln...
The state did not pay for this, this does not come out of taxpayers money, this is not really fighting for the "right" for pornography. This is fighting the state actively blocking something a prisoner wishes to be sent to him. So the rather overly emotive phrases along the lines of "the taxpayer shouldn't pay for porn" are a bit out of place. They aren't. At least, not over here.
