*The changing intensity of the wind moaning across the foggy moor seemed not so much drowned out by, but rather driven off in blind fear of the sound and progress that voices, many voices were making it's way. The crumbling tower they advanced upon sat indifferently, almost indolently, showing not the slightest awareness of the impending contact.
The crowd noise swelled as it flowed up to and around the place, said once to be a place of learning and fellowship, others had been heard to speak of tales overheard as a child spying on the old ones, that freedom from unwanted invasion had been the cornerstone of the ediface, it's lifeblood. Hard to believe, much less imagine the decrepit structure facing them now having anything to do with those ideals anymore, if ever. Certainly their power had been consumed in the tranformation to the dark side, leaving the evil to fill the void. Pestered on all sides, beset upon by the vicious attacks on a daily basis, unable to see from where the evil that betrayed trust and home email addy was striking from, the people of Ironworks desperately hit 'Delete', 'Delete', again and again. Yet still the evil came. "Help Us" Cried the people, and they were told to adjust the mail filter; perform the ceremony of 'Blocking'; yet still the evil was there the next day as if sown by the evil; electronic dragon's teeth chewing insatiably away at the people's meager storage limit. Then one of the people ran across a frayed and tattered piece of parchment, a remnant of the time when knowledge had been widely available to all of the people, something called 'hard copy'. This particular remnant seemed to have come from something called "Playboy", August 2002. Living Online,pg. 33 it said, and here the truth of the tower and it's fall from grace were revealed. "Have you signed up for a Yahoo groups membership? (I think anything Yahoo is suspect where you gave your alternate or home addy to register.JJ) If so , you probably elected not to allow Yahoo to share your name with third-party advertisers. Well, guess what? In March, the cash-desperate company switched everyone's account to the send me spam option. If you don't want junk mail, you'll have to go to groups.yahoodotcom and sign in. Then click on 'account info' which brings up your 'yahoo id card' click on edit marketing preferences, where you have to click on every yes to a no and then click on save changes. There's no telling when Yahoo will switch you back to the 'spam me' option, so check your preferences frequently." Then gave the good folk of the beleagured Ironworks a great cheer, such a cacophony of joy and intention it seemed as if the so far indifferent tower actually resonated, nay, shivered with the sound of it. Breaching the walls of the tower, the people stormed in to slay the where it had hidden from the light of 'Junk Filter Options'. They even penetrated to heart of the beast, if such a soulless, amoral, devourer of already-to-small storage space in your email inbox could be said to possess said organ. Then they found it, the great, chancreous, supporating, oozing center from which the multi send-addy mailbot had conjured the wicked worm immune from even the High Priest's 'DELETE!' spell. The stories told, songs sung, and legends begun from the historic, horriffic heroic, and (only when appropriate) humorous happenings of that day are the very foundation of the brave new world we all live in now. Ask anyone, and they will tell you - even point to the horizon, and say: "Right over there is where The Ironworkers from the fabled land of The Great Escape will come from, should ever return. The End - (Only if you let it be.......) [ 08-31-2002, 02:03 PM: Message edited by: J.J. ]
