Fully agree. My sister has worked as a school teacher for more than twenty years (closing in on thirty). And teaching is a bloody tough job here in Singapore.

I don't think I ever said anything to the effect that women are wimps and can only do secretarial jobs etc. I just said that personally I find the idea of tomboy amazons disagreeable.

As for the whole water-and-Malaysia issue, all I have to say is this. Whenever you always need someone to supply you something, s/he can always use that against you by threatening to withdraw that something. So I guess a certain degree of independence can only be a good thing.

Simply put; getting water from Indonesia is still not as economical as getting it from Malaysia.

The nearest part of Malaysia is literally about a mile away. It's easy to pump water via the Causeway as the distance is relatively short.
Getting water from Indonesia, otoh, is more complicated as (I suppose) the nearest source would be hundreds of miles away. Plus there is no guarentee that the Indons too would hold us ransom by threatening to cut off our water.
Hence our drive for self sufficiency in water. I suppose we learnt from the Japanese attack on Malaya in 1942 - the Brits blew up the Causeway (& the water supply) as they retreated and from that point on Singapore was doomed. At that time there were only three reservoirs, enough to last just about a week or so.

AliCat, I am not sure if you are referring to me, but if you are, could you please point where did I insult women?
