when comparing, i don`t think Diablo 2 is that much worse. i think its quite good, and i actually want to play it more than BG2 or Ps:T right now(i cant! the CD broke !)
I posted this topic to say that D2 is a very good game. lol, when i played it, i once read a post written by some guy, where he said something like:"It is so sad that such a good game company(Blizzard) has sunk so low. They were greedy enough to make a real moneymachine out of it and tricked people to buy such an unintelligent and far too linear game. this hack n slash game is also too repetitive and crap when compared to the others." and so on. I think Blizzard had a fine idea, just like the BG creators. And of course, they did not trick anybody into playing it! many bought it and many were pleased(including me ). the only thing that started bugging me later was the places where i had to go. Act III was very annoying(except for the boss ). LoD really rocked! the classes were fun to play with(cool skills and spells) and Act V was by far the best one! BTW, D2 had one thing that IMHO was much cooler than in BGs. the items(though they had diffirent rules)! D2 had all sorts of diffirent stuff: normal, magical, rare, set, unique. not to forget the normal, elite and exceptional items . any next little bugger youre gonna meet had a very small chance of having one of the best items in the game. |

In general I agree with you - although my D2 disc is still collecting dust while BG2 and BG1 get played regular. (Except technicaly those also gather dust since I use no-cd cracks to save on disc swapping)
But i reckon having those random items would spoil BG2, since a part of it is hunting out all those unique items to equip yourself with.

I think that D2 is too much a treasure hunting game, you want better items all along instead of having a generic system and let your character make the difference instead.. Well well..
D2 have been really fun for some time, but right now I replay the first two levels before I tire of it.. Uninstall time I guess.. Bg2 and the other games can take it just that much, don´t play them too much either, after a couple of times through them it´s like watching a video for the tenth time, you know the lines you know the secrests and voila..

Yeah too bad I know what is going to happen next in BG...
Well Diablo II is a good game, it depends how you play it... and it still depends on the character... I think the chances of me dying (that is VERY small) for a sorceress is larger than of my chances nearly non-existent to a Barbarian since I like playing this character. It depends on your gaming style and so on... I also like the item hunting, as it is what keeps me going through NM and Hell difficulties... BG2 is a good game, and Torment, that is maybe one game with too many scripts to memorize... It is more of a novel than a game |

Must agree, Act V is very very good! I was especially disappointed by Act IV. Apart from Cain and Tyreal, TWO characters, and you can't even TALK to them??? The whole area was a bit boring, the graphics weren't that great. River of Flame was cool, but the Outer Plains etc. looked pretty dull |

If you were to ask me(which you are)...i would say that all three of these games are excellent, and also very different from one another.
they each have different qualities which make them stand apart from each other... all in all, these three games kick equal amounts of glorious butt.

Well... D2 is a fun game, in the way that it's made. Yes, there's the skill aspect... but you'll probably admit that the game is mainly hack and slash kill everything in sight. I'm not complaining about it. I played through it a couple of times (never bothered with higher difficulties past a little bit through nightmare, though... too repetetive for me), and it was pretty good, but then I got bored with the repetition.
As for BG2... after playing through it a few times... but BG2 is a much longer game, as I'd guess you noticed. Also, I personally liked the fact that (at least to me) it seemed that the BG games made you think a bit more (probably because of the fact that they're AD&D rules and the characters are a good bit more fragile than in D2). Also, I liked the whole control system more (while D2's ws easier to learn, I kind of liked having the whole cheerful BG thingy control system/interface), and the storyline ( ), etc. *shrug* Played BG/BG2/ToB/IWD... not PS:T or the IWD expansions. For a comparison of BG2 and D2... I think it would be... D2: - VERY simple interface - Very simple gameplay mechanics - Storyline nearly nonexistent - Tactics very low - Can spend hours and hours searching for items - In general (at least before Hell/later Nightmare) combat is pretty easy (haven't played in those difficulties) - Focused pretty much purely on combat BG2: - More complex interface (but a good one, IMO) - Fairly complex game mechanics (AD&D...) - Great storyline - Fairly high amount of tactics (esp. in BG/beginning of the games, but also throughout) - Items aren't randomly generated, so less item hunting, a lot less - Harder combat (hardest in BG/IWD beginning, but in general harder than in D2) - Focused on storyline/combat, RP (some) I think that's a pretty good comparison, at least in how I see the games... don't mistake me, both are fun, they're just fun in different ways... |
