I'm gonna start as a monk. This is my second time around, was a kensai the first time. Here is my question. Should you give monks weapons? I could in theory give celestial fury to monks, couldn't I. So do I play hand to hand all the way or use weapons???

Gauntlets of Crushing, Anyone?
Well... It all depends, when you're of a decent level and have Gauntlets of Crushing, I recommend the good ol' kung fu way. If not, go for that Sonic Boom casting sword. ------------------ A Drawn Sword; A Trickle Of Blood; The Tempest Is Brewing. Nemesis.... |

I play a monk. You may need a weapon early on; however, even at lower levels "stunning blow" is great. At level 13 you get "quivering palm" once every 24 hours where any opponent must make save v. death (with one blow; I killed a dragon that way once.) I am lvl. 16 now and my hands are +3. Other advantages.: lay on hands, immunity to poison, magic resistance, etc. I think monks are great! Good luck

In the very least at your early stages you should have one equipped in case you need it against a baddie that needs something enchanted to kill it. I did that and used it only when I needed it and used my hands ther rest of the time until I didn't need to have the weapon anymore. Besides don't your hands start off doing longsword equivalent damage anyway? From there the sky is the limit.

Nothing much to add to what everyone else has said - Monks can use Katanas, but their hands are better at higher levels - quivering palm & stunning blow are great. They also move quickly!
Generally great fun to play as a monk, I'd recommend it. ------------------ Time is an illusion. Lunchtime doubly so. |

I'm playing as a monk at the moment and they are cool but I really recommend getting a +weapon early on just in case and darts are always a good weapon to specialise in as you can use them from a distance but at a higher level I dont thing theres a better thing in the game than punching and kickin your way ou of trouble.

Monks are nearly unfair. Once they are treated as +3 weapons, they are nearly indestructable combined with the quivering palm, there is no match in the game. Plus their movement rate is such that if the going gets tough they can run away like no other.

I played a monk through the single player game, then took her into the multiplayer world and started really beefing her up. After playing through, across and over Kangaxx a couple of times for his ring(s)and getting some amulet of magic resistance or something like that on her, those combined with her magic resistance gives her 97% magic resistance. Add into that being immune to normal weapons and the girdle of Frost Giant strength and 3 attacks per roiund (or whatever it is) and she's quite the tank. In the beginning, though a good long sword is very handy. I used the Blade of Roses for a long time with her.
