The appraise skill determines how much of a discount you will get when buying from a merchant, as well as how much of a markup you will get when selling items.

Basically, a d20 is rolled when you first meet a merchant. The appraise skill modifier (+ INT modifier) is then added to this d20 roll, and the higher the roll, the more money you will save.

Presumably, each merchant has a DC, over which the reaction is favourable (you save), under which the reaction in unfavourable (you spend more) and on which the reaction is neutral (no change from items base value).

Once you have browsed a merchants inventory, the amount you pay and gain for your goods are constant for that merchant (i.e. you can't keep talking to him to vary the price, once it is fixed).

does the degree of success have any bearing on price, ie a result that is favorable by 1 over the needed DC vs 15 over the DC?

I think that's with the different attitudes, neutral favourable, though these might be found through different DCs. It should make a difference but if it's implemented I don't know

Does multiclassing change anything? I have a halfling fighter that I'm about to change to a rogue.
