Looking at the feat listing...what exactly does improved/superior initiative do for a character? It merely states it provides a +x bonus on initiative checks, and I can't find anywhere in the manual exactly what initiative does. In IWD2, the initiative determined weapon attack speed and spell casting time...is this the same for NWN?

Thanks

When you first enter a new fight you roll your ini check. This'll determine in which way the combatants react, so who'll go first.
So if the monter rolls higher he attacks first, if you don't have uncanny dodge you'll be denied dex bonus to ac, you're flatfooted. You'll go later.
If you go first you will have more chance to do damage.
In NWN it's really important to PCs who can sneak attack (lots of monsters are immune to sneak attacks ) or in huge fights as you either deal (if you're first) or receive (if you're later than monster) more damage, in huge fights being last means potentially receiving a lot of damage.

The ini.roll also has something to do with attacks of opportunity if you get them and how many...am not quite sure about the numbers on this...so any one who can fill them in...pleaz do!

I think this is also the order in which combatants deal their AOOs, if applicable. AOO are when a creature moves through occupied area, uses a ranged weapon in melee, and I'm not sure on this but it's so in D&D3(.5) when it's attacking in the rrange of a reach weapon. Normally everyone can make one AOO per round, which can be increased with some feats, though I'm not sure if and/or which of these are implemented in NWN (not counting epic levels haven't looked at those feats).

I don't think ini rolls affect the numbers of AOOs as those are fixed. Might be something Bioware implemented.
