Cleric

Melee- Can wear heavy armor without spell failure, though simple weapons are not great. However, add one feat (Weapon Proficiency-Martial) and they right below the warriors as far as melee combat.

Missile- same as melee, with that feat giving you access to bows.

Spells- In the beginning, the extra healing is awesome. Later, when healing is not as useful (i.e. you have twenty million healing potions), they get some good solid attack spells (not as strong as a mage, but still very nice). I tell people over and over again that the Animal domain rocks (have stronger summons than any other character of the same level can have, plus get true sight as a 3rd level spell). You get Find Traps as a 2nd level spell (as opposed to the wizard/sorcerer 3rd level).

Skills- Persuasion, definitely one of the most useful skills in the game, is a class skill. Lore and Heal are both useful, too.

The only thing he can't do is open locks. Opening locks is easy if you have anything that does elemental damage, so that is not a big loss. All in all, a very well-rounded character.

Fighter? No way.
I think that Barbarians are much better than Fighters. You get a d12 hit die, and you get Barbarian Rage, Fast Movement, Uncanny Dodge, and Damage Reduction. A fighter gets a "Bonus Feat" ability. Amazing.
