In the Serpent Temple there is an area with six doors, four switches, and a coin slot. What is the combination of switches which opens the doors? Help! By my calculations, there are a possible 384 permutations (excluding overlapping sets) depending on whether the order of switches matters and/or whether some switches should be flipped or not. By trial and error it would take well over 8 or 9 hours to try all the possibilities.

Would you like a hint or the answer?

Here is a hint that brings the number of combinations down to a managable level.

There is one door that opens when only one lever is up.
There are two doors that open when only two levers are up.
There are three doors that open when three levers are up.

That should take care of all six doors.

Once I realized this, it was easy to map out the door combinations.

P.S. If you want the answer instead of the hint, let us know and we will post that.

Thanks a lot. Your hint was very helpful. I'm sure I can work out the whole sequence now.

I think your calculations are wrong. The number of possibles is calculated by 2*2*2*2 = 16. the number 2 is the the possibles for each lever (up or down) 4 times for the number of levers. I wrote down all the possibles first than tried them all. I got to 12 before all the doors were open were all open.
