Don't forget that a paladin can also cast Draw Upon Holy Might for a bonus to Str, Dex and Con. Although, a gnome fighter/cleric could do the same.

On saving throws.
Paladins get an innate +2 to all saves. Gnomes get an innate +5 to save against spells. Most of the important saves you need to make are against spells. So until you start buffing (and a gnome can benefit from protection from evil just as easily as a paladin - the only problem is he doesn't get a ridiculous number of casts for free) the gnome has better saving throws. Most of the other buffs that boost saving throws are for the full party (bless, chant, prayer etc.).
