Gidday,

I understand that blunt weapons are better for skeletons, but is it really worth sacrificing a proficiency point for blunt weapons with my fighter (who is specialising in axes & bows) and my paladin (who is specialising in large swords and bows).

cheers

No, not really. You'll be able to kill them with any weapon. Skeletons just have some minor resistance against slashing and piercing weapons

Minor being 50%. May not matter on easier difficulty levels, but on HoF... it may mean another 5 minutes of hacking and slashing.

Though of course you can use blunt weapons without being proficient in them..

Not a good idea on HoF mode... when you take into consideration,

1) Your ApR is reduced to 1
2) Enemy AC on HoF is amazing, and not being proficient in the weapon that you are using affects your THAC0 (which is already lousy against their AC, unless you buff up to the gills) and more importantly, your damage

I rather use a Slashing weapon that my character is Specialised in, than a Blunt weapon that he/she is not. The efficiency factor would be much better.

Yeah, well assuming you are playing on HoF mode, otherwise those 50% hardly gonna make 'life' much easier for the average skeleton. In any case, to counter this I always have at least one character specializing in a blunt weapon, better to spread out the proficiencies so you can use as many of the good weapons available as possible.

Nutman,

In light of Dundee's information, Stratos' suggestion is an excellent one: Let each of your warriors specialize in one melee weapon, but make sure at least one person in the party specializes in a weapon that delivers crushing damage. (I pick my Fighter/Priest or Fighter/Druid DC; and this is another excellent reason to DC your Priest, Mage or Druid: he picks up lots of proficiency points as a Fighter, even if he DCs at Fighter 3.)

I would advise the that you had at least 2 members of your party were proficient in some sort of blunt weapon as you will find significant enemies later on in the game are resistant to magic and other damage. Won't spoil the game by naming these enemies but blunt weapons are great against them.
