Hello, I made a mistake that appears major but I'm hoping I can fix it.... I will be really disappointed if I can't.

SPOILER ???? ....Some plot revealed .....

I completed some of Chapter 6 in IWD and then installed HOW. I am now in Lonelywood and went to the Barbarian camps. I went through the whole scripted interaction with Wolfdyne (sp.) and then was escorted back outside the camps. For some unknown reason, I attacked Andaar (sp.) - after I got all the experience points I could get out of him. Of course, the whole barbarian camp got mad and (after many trips back to Lonelywood) was able to defeat everyone in the camp, including Beordor (sp.) Sorry, my recollection of names is terrible! I did not go inside the big building that housed Wolfdyne. I am now in Burial Isle. I went to PlanetBaldur's Gate to check out the walkthrough for HOW. I read ahead (because I had a sinking feeling about killing everyone in the barbarian camps) and see that I won't be able to progress beyond Burial Isle with the whole camp dead.

No big deal for me to start HOW over since I've essentially just started, but I fear that I cannot undo what I have done and start HOW over. Please help! I am hoping I haven't permanently screwed this up.

I've worked so hard to build my characters up and can't even imagine losing them!!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Cathy

Hi, welcome to IW. You seem to be in a right old mess. I think you can CLUA all the NPCs that you need to talk to, but I havent seen a code list for IWD yet.

So its possible to fix, but its probably less effort to go back to a previous save.

hi andrewas, thanks for your reply.

CLUA? I'm not sure what that is.... and to make matters really screwy I don't have a previous save to fall back on. sigh. you would think that with all the time i've put into this i would have thought of having multiple saves, but alas, nothing. even the auto-save is beyond the point where i attacked the barbarian camp, so i can't use that.

is it possible to somehow uninstall HOW and wipe clean the whole ugly barbarian camp destruction, get my characters back to how they were in IWD and just start HOW over?

you can always export your characters and start it over again (you don't lose any items or exp by doing this)

well morgeruat, things are looking up with your suggestion. thank you!

another problem though... i went ahead and exported characters. uninstalled HOW (and when I did that it said it also uninstalled IWD). I went to go re-install HOW and said it couldn't until IWD was also re-installed. makes sense so far. however, when I put in the IWD CD it acts as though it is still installed (i mean that the uninstall button is accessible, but not the install button). if I hit the uninstall button nothing happens. well, it makes a bunch of whirring noises, but that's it. and, if i hit the play button nothing really happens either (which to me sounds like it's not installed). it gives me some message about some missing pathway and to manually start the program?! have i lost you yet? i am totally clueless...HELP!

You might need to do some registry fixes as well. Go to the start button, run dialog -->regedit--> find your local machine, software, then remove any icewind dale entries. then go to current user and do the same, also under software. if that doesn't get you the "install" option, you might need to go into some more advanced windows registry stuff for the uninstall programs list in the registry.

IM me if you have any questions.. this is not something most people should do.

Ratchild is correct, this is a registry problem. He forgot to mention that you *need* to take a backup before messing around in there, because one mistake can kill your machine dead.

ALso you should use the search option to find anything related to Icewind, Bioware, Black Isle. Remove all of them, cross your fingers, reboot and reinstall. Pray if you like, cant hurt anything. Registry editing is 50% magic and 50% luck anyhow.

Whats going to hurt you though is there was no need to unisntall HoW in the first place, you could have just imported your characters straight into a new game.

And although its irrelevant now, CLUA is the cheat console. Iy could have fixed your problem with a little work, but youd need to know your way around the IWD data files in order to get the neccesary codes. I could probably do it, but itd be faster and easier to restart the game from scratch.

Im on MSN if you need any quick advice. And if you can catch me logged on.
