when does ability for stealth kick in ( i have it presently? do I need to travel in shadows first? there is no real message to me like when my thief goes into stealth mode. I would like to use him more like my thief but i can't seem to get stealth to work right ...........help.....

Your thief's ability to hide in shadows (using stealth) is dependent upon that skill level. Click on his stealth button (the head) and wait until you get the message in the message window that your thief is successfully hiding in shadows. Keep an eye on this, because they may wander into an area with higher light and might be unsuccessful in hiding in shadows. If I'm scouting, I try to make it quick, so my thief doesn't get caught in the middle of enemies by himself, and is revealed.

it is my ranger's ability i would also like to use. This is the chr i cannot get it to work for.

He cannot use hide in shadows if he's wearing any armor above studded leather. You'll have to take it off of him for it to work. Give it a try & see if you are then able to utilize the stealth button

I think it will work with elven chain mail too, found (randomly, I think), at The Hand.
