Income tax is 31% (but that depends where in Sweden you live). But because I don't make that much money (I'm a student) I pay less. But before those 31% there's also the money for pension, vacation, etc. I don't think that's that bad. Less than 10% income tax is crazy! Do you even get anything for that? I mean, what do you pay for with it? Here I get free education and healthcare, pension, etc. Everything I need basically. Sales tax is 25% for ordinary things, 6% on books, for food maybe 12%. For alcohol it depends what kind of alcohol it is, though it's still very high - vodka has around 80% tax. You don't want to buy alcohol in Sweden... That's why people go on boat trips to Denmark or Estonia.

I think The Netherlands might top the list of income taxes. Depending on how much you make, they can tax you for up to 57% (I think it used to be 67%) on the highest parts of your salery.

Pffft. There are worse places to be when looking at how much tax you have to pay.

Hey guys...... i'm a lurker coming out
Theres also miore taxes in Australia, tax on fuel, alcohol and other things too! As others have said there is GST (Goods and services tax) on almost anything, which is 10%. Also can be some pretty big "stamp duties" on many things, like when buying cars and houses.

Yeah there is almost a tax for everything here in Australia.
They ahve fixed the Stamp duty on first home buyers who are buying a house under $500 000. So in that regards my wife and I are lucky that we don't have to pay the stamp duty. There are also tranfer taxes when transfering the registration of a car into another persons name (i.e you have just sold it) You would think that something as simple as transfering the name on a car registration would be a fixed rate yet they charge us 30 cents to the dollar value of the sale to transfer the registration on the car.

In Canada we have a lobby group of accountants who calculate how long you have to work every year to pay the government bills.
They add up the income taxes, property taxes, licences, duties, fees etc. and come up with an amount. The accountants then figure if you did nothing but pay all the taxes starting January 1st, when would you start working for yourself. They call it Tax Freedom Day. It varies from province to province but in Ontario I believe we start working for ourselves around July 23rd…
