Okay, I had heard of the blue ray technology and now they are talking about High Definition technology. My question is concerning my current player and disks. What are these reports saying to me? That my DVD player will not be able to play the DVDs that are coming out in the next five years?
What about all the movies that I have now? If my DVD player breaks down and I buy one of the new ones, will that blue ray stuff not read my old disks?

The new players will play old style disks, mainly because no-one would buy them if they are not backwards compatible. As for blu-ray, its a completely different technology, so it wont be compatible with normal DVD's. Oh well, they are only going to hold 50gig

I'm going to be hugely disapointed if HD-DVD becomes the next DVD standard. HD-DVD isn't really a new generation of DVD, rather it is just a current generation DVD technology with a fancier compression scheme. Blu-ray on the otherhand represents a real leap forword in DVD technology.
