A "Do Not Spam" registry will only work once you get rid of free and/or anonymous email accounts. Which should be done anyway, right? I mean, you can't have an anonymous street address or telephone number (you may not publish it or your name, but at the very least the provider knows who you are).

"A Report to Congress," says spammers are notorious for disobeying federal laws, so there's no reason they would abide by such a registry. And the cloak of anonymity permitted by the Internet means enforcement of such a list would be nearly impossible."
The above 'it's too hard I give up' attitude is one that really annoys me, it gets repeated like a mantra. At least try! At the very least you make it hard for them and hey! you just might win! For the government not to try smacks of LOSER or worse still 'corrupt'

in all honesty, i think the best way to stop spam is for people to read the email headers, and have a centeralised spam fighting center to send them to. then the spammers could be traced and locked up for good

SPAM- Silly Pesky Average Mailing. Spammers should be shot on sight with tranquilizer darts, thrown into a prison and summarily executed. Failed that, they should loose access to a computer for 1-3 years.
