Last night when I shut down I got the blue screen of death. Now my computer only gets to the login and locks up or gets stuck on loading windows.
How do I fix this problem? Does the Windows XP CD have a repair option. I have not tried anything yet. Just want to see if anyone knows what to do before I reformat and lose all my information. It is a dell computer. If I have to reinstall every thing will I be able to go to Dos first to retain information? [ 04-13-2004, 11:42 AM: Message edited by: pritchke ] |

Try old school first. Power switch off, then unplug power cord, cycle power switch and on/off switch 2 times to drain any residual curretn. Plug er in, and away you go.
If she doesn't want to power back up, then that is surely power supply issue. If it does power up, but still won't load, then OS, but should be ok after power drain. Have you by chance done anything with your BIOS recently?

I will try that before trying to repair windows XP.
I really hope it doesn't require a reformat and reinstillation of everything. I got a CD stuck last night and I could not remove it. I could not shut down properly because the CD was running. Ctrl+Alt+Del acted like nothing was running. So I had to shut down the hard way (poweroff while windows still running), then I had to use the pin to get the CD to open. It would not pop the CD out while the computer was running. I should have checked the processes running first. [ 04-13-2004, 12:15 PM: Message edited by: pritchke ] |

I found out that I had 4 viruses on my comp. 3 of which were worms, 1 Norton can't seem to do anything with but it is not a worm. I will do some research and see if there is something out there that will remove it.
I think the problem may have been the viruses, as when I managed to get in to my computer, it was running as slow as molasses uphill on a cold winter day. Now it seems to be running fairly decent. The virus or infected file that is left still bugs me. [ 04-14-2004, 10:11 AM: Message edited by: pritchke ] |

Try Pc-cillins housecall. t does a very god job in identifying vira and trojans. I don't know if it will clean/quarantine them though. I guess you would need removal tools for that and there's plenty of those. FYI Norton is terrible at detecting/removing worms and torjans.

I just needed to update Norton. The virus has been taken care of. I did lose my fiancés profile it was corrupted, thank God the information could still be found. I managed to create a new profile for her and plug her info in that.
