Came across this link that covers the basics on WLAN security. It adds a couple of things that I've forgotten that I use, like disabling SSID broadcast. For those who've been asking questions about wireless of late, it's a quick and helpful read.

Thanks for the link, and your early help.
Those are good tips, and after getting my wireless set up this week, I'm doing all except the MAC addresse(s). I'll have to check into that this weekend. Would the MAC addresse(s) be strictly for the wireless connections or for the hard wired as well? [ 10-17-2003, 11:44 AM: Message edited by: Ronn_Bman ]

The MACs are just for the wireless connections. You may be able to do something with it for wired, but they've got to be connected to you, so why bother? If they're already in the house...
And you're welcome. Enjoy the wireless world. *edit* forgot to add that you can find the MACs on the wireless NIC (sometimes) or by clicking on its properties on the client. 'Course, the easiest way might be to connect in via wireless, go to the router, and access the MAC connections page. That will show you who's out there... Cool. I just thought that since all machine on the LAN have MACs that each might need to be included. Only having to do the wireless connections will make it easy for me since I only have 1...lol.
Here's another home networking question for you. How do I assign static LAN addresses? Can I have some static and some not? Still another.... Do I only get the one page of port forwarding? After those are occupied that's it?

Static IPs... varies by OS, but in Windows, go to Control Panel, Networks, TCP/IP properties (it's somewhere in there). Instead of "Obtain IP address automatically", specify the addy you want to use.
As for Port Forwarding, I'm not sure. How many ports are you thinking you need to let through? You may not really need that many....

I know opening up dozens and dozens of ports doesn't seem like a good idea when security is so important, but some games require multiple ports (in order to host), and if you have multiple games....
Battlefield 1942 is one of those greedy monsters. It requires 5 different sets of ports to be open; that alone is nearly half of the forwarding list. Add another game or two, plus Roger Wilco, and an FTP server and suddenly nothing is available. Then I'm erasing one to add another when I'm probably going to need it again. Security wise, it isn't a big a deal as it at first may seem. I'd like to list lots of ports, but I can open or close the by checking or un-checking the box at the end. You can, of course, go DMZ, but that really does open everything. [ 10-18-2003, 09:25 AM: Message edited by: Ronn_Bman ]

So has anyone else encountered this with their router?
