Durham police still fielding calls about intruder
By BRIAN DEKONING

Democrat Staff Writer

DURHAM — Police continue to interview "persons of interest" and have received several dozen tips in the downtown intruder case, but still have not named a suspect or made any arrests.

From June 25 to July 22, police had five reports from University of New Hampshire co-eds that a man entered their off-campus apartments in the early morning hours and attempted to disrobe the women, according to Police Chief Dave Kurz.

On Thursday, Kurz said police have interviewed "two or three persons of interest," but have not named any suspects. He declined to comment on evidence, but said police are canvassing downtown neighborhoods where the crimes took place.

"It will continue to be the position of the Durham Police Department that we don’t discuss the evidence or procedures we have in the media," Kurz said. "The integrity of the case is paramount and that will remain our policy."

Kurz declined to comment on whether police have developed a profile of the intruder. He only said they have asked state police in New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont as well as the FBI to search their data bases for people who have committed similar crimes.

Kurz declined to comment on whether a man arrested early in July for a similar intrusion in Dover is a suspect in the Durham crimes, but said the man has declined to be interviewed by police.

Because of the bizarre nature of the crimes, some in the UNH community have dubbed the perpetrator "Jack the Snipper."

Victims describe the snipper as tall, thin, white and having dark hair. He is believed to be in his 20s.

Two of the victims have told Foster’s Daily Democrat scissors were used to cut their clothing from their bodies as they slept.

One of the victims awoke after straps of her tank top were cut, and the snipper fled. Another woman who is the victim in the earliest known case said she went to bed clothed and woke up nude, and that scissors were used to cut her shirt and bra from her body.

Police have said they believe the five cases are linked. None of the women have been sexually assaulted. They are all younger than 25, police have said.

Rest of the story

This is one of the most bizzare cases I've heard of lately.

Mark

That's a serial rapist in the making. Right now he is too afraid of the consequences of a full rape - one day though, he isn't going to stop with cutting - and the scissors will become his weapon.

Hope that they catch him before he moves on to the next inevitable phase.
