ToEE "identify item" spell

Does anyone know WHY the II spell costs 100 gold to cast? What was the reasoning behind this? It's already a pain in the butt enough to do an II camp to begin with(in other RPG's),, now it costs gold too?

because in the pen and paper d+d rules identify costs 100 gold - or more precisely 'a pearl of at least 100gp value, crushed and stirred into wine with an owl feather; the infusion must be drunk prior to spellcasting.'
many spells use components that you'd readily find in a spell component pouch but others are more costly.

wow, are you talking about casting it yourself Elfbane? I never noticed it taking up money...maybe I'm not that observant lol.

If so, that's a good explanation Betelgeuse. Healing magics cost a lot of money too, so I never pay for any of it unless I really need it.
