What is the best way to kill them and how do I stop them being held.
Also where is the cloak of reflection? |

They do their damage with cause wounds and lightning.
The Cause wonds are a trouble until you have the Cloak of Reflection (on a Sahaugin preistess in the Underwater City). Spell turning can help, but it's a 3rd level spell to turn, and so you'd have to have a lot of them. But if you can turn their damage, the Gauths (and beholders) will kill themselves. Protection from electricity is, of course, easier. And the ring of free action to avoid holds. Before you get the cloak, fill up on super-healing potions. |

Send in summoned animals, monsters, and skeletons - they did it for me.

I'd suggest trying to defeat the Beholders and Gauths without either the Cloak of Reflection (or Cloak of Cheating as it's sometimes called) Baldurans Shield or the other reflective item that renders Beholders innefective. Why on Earth that item was put in the game is completely beyond me to be honest. If you're wearing it there's absolutely no point in having Beholders in the game, you may as well have an empty Beholder dungeon and just collect the loot. I promise you, although very difficult to defeat, Gauths and Beholders can be beaten without this/these items and the sense of real achievement far outweighs that of strolling through a dungeon full of completely innefectual enemies.

SPOILER
/ / / / / / / / / / To kill gauths and beholders you can make your cleric invisible (spell, potion, ring, whatever), cast blade barrier and walk said cleric right up to them. The cleric might not take them out completely but will hurt them up to a point that they are badly wounded, near death. Then cast invisibility on your best fighters, after the blade barrier has run out, move them in and start hacking. With this strategy they are easy. JR Damned i lost cousin Jan's techno gloves |
