i have the key and have spoken to martens ghost.

There are a few doors like that. You need to touch the Key of Serenity anywhere on the door.
A general way to know where to use stuff is to watch where your cursor pointer becomes a hand. |

Where you first enter the rattkin tree there's a building. Inside on the floor is a trap door covered by straw. Go down that and you'll be by the chest with the helm. After you have it, you can walk out.
