Gregor in the Lower Monestary could be a reference to Gregor Mendell the monk who pioneered heredity.

Maybe, but I think Gregor is more likely reference to a work by Kafka, the Czech writer. He wrote a novel about a guy waking up and finding out he was a roach. I forget the name of the book at this time, maybe "Metamorphosis". It was a protest against conformity and government intrusion, I think, but others can help me out here.
