Any way to get over this? The only magic users I have are a lord, psionic, and a monk. Before I enter the temple, I cast chameleon to get closer to my quick death, magic screen, and armor plate. ASAP, everyone loads up an eye for an eye potion, I try and silence as many cultists as possible, and I throw three canned elementals.
I have yet to lay a scratch on anyone besides the cultists. After 30 or so tries, I have had no luck. Please advise.

Well its a very difficult fight
You will have to be high enough level. Im assuming youre just straight dying to death spells and especially death clouds. Ok I cant recall the exact level I finally beat this fight. perhaps around 15. On expert. My party was a fighter a samurai a cleric a wizard a gadgeteer and a bard. Have magic shield already up. Stay near the entrance hit fight, and run pending hit soul shield and elemental shield and canned elemental Run all the way around to one of the two entrances and turn around. Bard casts chaos drone. K youre missing most of these elements. Your psionicist can cast pandemonium though and the position will be the same im sure. You want to fight them one at a time as they enter and you dont want to be hit by any range spells. Even with these elements nothing beats just having a higher level. You will survive the two demon things death spells and clouds better and they will resist your spells less. I remember when I finally won this fight I had gotten hex off on several cultists and had managed to get turncoat on them. However nothing beats being at the entrance and fighting them a few at a time all from close range. Your chameleon and sneak up to fight them all at once tactic will likely kill you 100% of the time. |

There are many strategies for fighting these guys. I find it one of the hardest battles as well, sometimes you do have to level up to 15 or more to get tough enough. Stamar has a good strategy, I used it as well, even running around the corner of the building outside to make them come to me. Doesn't always work. They can give up the hunt, and you have to start over, sans some magic points and they are waiting around the corner. One Death Cloud can ruin your whole day! Any way you can, keep all magic protections up. Use all before battle that you can. Have a lot of magic nectars or stones. If you put Gaurdian Angel on your Bishop, say, renew it after four or five rounds if under physical attack, even if not expired. Beware, the Death guys can hit through walls. Elementals are good. Silence is good, Pandemonium is good, Insanity by bard is good on cultists. In my last attempt, a few days ago, I went straight in as you did. Lost the first 2, won the third (but the Bish lost it, I no longer think a Mook Bishop is such a good idea, the only who has been killed, 3 times now). I was probably higher level than you, and used the Air spell to remove afflictions (forget its name). If your magic user has the points and is slow, you can cast it before you get Death Clouded and it will prevent it from taking effect at the end of the round. Otherwise, Death Cloud is random in its killing and you may have a chance in the next round. Definately a challenge, almost a guaranteed do-over.

Here's how I did it, quite by accident. This is my first time through the game, btw. When I was around level 13, I journeyed up to the cathedral and got slaughtered. So, I had my psionic set chameleon at max, and I sneaked in and grabbed the stuff on the left balcony. The enemies were activated when I came down, but I ran for it. I stopped when I got outside the cathedral, thinking they wouldn't pursue, but I was wrong. So, I ran again, and they eventually gave up halfway down the hill.
Well, I didn't return again until my characters were level 18-20, and to my surprise, they were all still on that stupid hill, and they were all scattered. So I picked them off a couple at a time as I walked up the hill, and got to fight the priestess while she was all by her lonesome. When by herself, she abandoned the summoning of elementals and just tried to attack me herself, futily. The two deathlords were alone at the top at the cathedral entrance. Easy pickings. Talk about a long-term strategy that paid off! |

The hang out around the corner worked well. Thanks.
For those interested in a few specifics - I threw two Canned Elementals in the door, and let them go to work. They really didn't kill any enemies, but I suppose they wore their stamina down for a few rounds. They also gave me enuf time to cast insanity on the cultists and pick three off with bows. Each character drank an Eye for an Eye potion which made the death cloud spell they cast work for us. It wound up killing all the elementals they summoned. The insanity made the three remaining cultists do each other in. As each enemy rounded the corner, my fairie ninja paralyzed them with the Cane o' Corpus, and the rest was easy.

The power of the hypnotic lure is what worked for me, half of the lot stood there staring at it while I went to work on the lords. By the time I killed them off and hit the crowds with insanity and such, I fought the preistess by her lonesome. It was a fairly simple, but drawn out fight.
