I found that you Can start a hydrid off as pure caster to get a jump start on spells, the trick is you have to get your five levels as a hybrid to start learning magic again, but you pick up exactly where you left off as a pure caster.
Example a pure caster learns level 3 spells at level 5. A hybrid at level 9 ( 4 plus 5). but If you spend 3 levels as mage and switch to samurai, you will still be able to learn 3 spells ar level 9...with a big bump in magic skills, and the ability to cast level 1 and 2 spells all the while. Most probably know this, but I was pleasantly suprised GD |

the only real problem with this is that your hitpoints will be a bit lower, due to spending 3 levels or so of the 9 as a pure caster.

I think (? - Wolfie) that you get a level value in a realm of magic for each level you had in a class that has access to that school, where you could cast in that class. So for every hybrid level above 5 it goes up one and would add on to any levels you got as a pure caster before that.

Yes, i've run a couple of those through. You pick up right where you left off; Level as Samurai minus Four plus Level as Mage equals Level of Casting. (and of Learning, while you're at it)
But i've found character development has worked better for hybrids to just start as hybrid. Mostly because the real opportunity for learning magic is in Arnika, and the Monastery is very well suited for combat development. And you start with more HP's, Str and Vit (in most cases) if you start as a hybrid. HP's are real important when you only have a few. |

I assume that your level is a very important factor when it comes to things like criticals. This surely was the case in Wiz7, and the info from some testing results threads sound like it is the same in Wiz8. |
