To cast spells:
1. Click the "Cast Spell" button, which looks like a crescent and 3 little stars.
2. A little menu, showing all of your currently memorized spells, will appear.
3. Click on the spell you wish to cast.
4. Your mouse pointer will turn into a crescent with 3 little stars--this is the "Cast Spell Here" pointer. Place this pointer over whoever you want to cast the spell on; if the desired target is a member of your party, you can also aim the pointer at their portrait on the right-hand side of the screen. NOTE: Some spells are automatically targeted, meaning they only affect (or are centered on) the caster, and therefore skip this step.

To give items from one party member to another:
1. Go to the Inventory screen of the person who currently has the item.
2. Click on the item to pick it up.
3. Move the item over the portrait of the person you want to give it to.
4. Click again to drop the item into their invertory. If their bag is already full, they will not be able to accept it.

To learn a LOT more about the game:
1. Look at my signature at the bottom of this post.
2. Click on the link.
3. Start reading.
4. Keep reading. Hoo boy!
5. WELCOME TO IRONWORKS!!

Tales of the Sword Coast is only an expansion to Baldur's Gate. So it only means that if you don't have a Baldur's Gate installed, you can't play TotSC...

thanks from me for those instructions too six

all this time i've been using the clumsy and inefficient method of:

going to the inventory - dragging my item to the floor - going to game screen - moving my character away from item - moving the recipient to item and picking it up

[slaps head]

can you 'throw' items across from one character to another in combat while paused then?

nigel123: you probably bought baldur's gate and ToTSC as a bundled pack - if the game is running you're almost certainly fine - it's worth installing the patches if you haven't

Armen - What you've written is near incomprehensible. Its also less efficient.
Six explained the procedures well enough, otherwise I'm sure Nigel123 would have asked for further elaboration.

Obviously you can pass items to other characters who are in range, but tis risky since the game is not paused whilst you're fiddling around in the inventory. We've all passed healing potions or antidotes desperately to those who need it, but do it at your own risk, I say.

well said. In BG2, the inventory screen pauses the game, but not in BG1. As Volo says in the manual (at least along these lines), "Try changing your armor while you're on the run!"
The idea in BG1 to un-pause the game while looking at your inventory makes sense. How can you change your armor or change your weapons without spending any time? I suppose that in BG2, there were just so many items that they had to pause it to make the game more playable.
