I have run through this game a few times but I have never encountered this.
My party just completed the elder brain level and now in the beholder level. Imoen is in my party and while we are poking the eyes out of beholders, she was petrified(turn to stone) and was later mazed/imprisoned... She just disappeared from my NPC list. Will she come back?
Normally, when my character was mazed, he/she will be back after a while of waiting... It happened to Minsc a couple of battles before, but Imoen was like really gone... Is there anyway to get her back? or I have to start looking for a new NPC?

are you sure she was imprisoned? Petrified chars go all chunkified if they are hit,and there is no way to get them back. If she was definitely imprisoned, look through your 9th level mage spells for a counter-spell.

Ilythiiri,

OK ... I'm not sure if the combination of having her petrified first followed by Maze / Imprisonment has messed up Imoen's chances.

(Spoilers ... click and drag or Ctrl-A to reveal ... at your peril!)

Maze and Imprisonment have different effects. As you've noted, Maze is typically temporary (solo games and 'whatnot' aside), however Imprisonment requires the spell 'Freedom' (also available as a Mage scroll) to release the victim.

The fact that she was petrified before either Maze or Imprisonment were cast may interfere with the revitalisation process, and she might be lost forever ... I'm not sure.

Personally as the next step I would seek out a Scroll of Freedom from the gnome merchants in the central-south area of the Underdark provided you have another Mage, Sorceror, Bard (or Thief with the 'Use Any Item' ability) who can cast the spell from the scroll.

If you don't have a spellcaster on hand, it may mean recruiting a new NPC just to cast the spell (Aerie, Nalia, Jan, Edwin, Haer'Dalis I think 'should' be able to do this), if not recruit on an ongoing basis. That is, once you've made it out of the Underdark, you may need to then pick up your new recruit and return to the Beholder lair to free Imoen. The Freedom scroll should cancel out the Imprisonment if you cast it in the same approximate area that Imoen was lost, and then you have a host of options to deal with the petrification (such as a green Stone to Flesh scroll or the Ring of Earth Control)

Not that I advocate cheating, but you might also consider redoing the battle by loading an older saved game.

If you don't have it in the spellbook, surely a nearby merchant will have something to help you out.

I just tested it, and if they are mazed while petrified, they will indeed come back when the spell wears off. If they are imprisoned while petrified, they also will return when you cast freedom. Petrification doesn't really change anything like that, it's just an extra variable activated on the character. So just follow Cam-H's advice and you should be set. Good luck,

But I have been resting for days already and she still hasn't come back.. Most likely I think she was imprisoned.. but I am in the beholder level in Underdark, I don't think there is a merchant or a mage NPC nearby that I could use to cast freedom on her... unless I can get back to town and later back here again, otherwise I really have to say goodbye to my trusted mage, Imoen
Well I mean I could always load my previous game , but still, there must be a way to save her under these circumstances...

edit: My party consist of PC(Cavalier),Keldorn,Minsc,Anomen,Jaheira and Imoen (the only sole mage), so I can't cast freedom when she is imprisoned..

You don't think there is one? Oh, well, then there probably isn't, you'd better give up.

That's very true. Freedom is a Wizard spell, so you'll have to recruit another Wizard or Bard into the party to cast the spell, or read it from a scroll, if you want to get Imoen back.
