Playing BG2 SoA after a a very very very long time. Can anyone enlighten me about where the boots of speed are in BG2 SoA? I remember there being 3 (i might be mistaken)

You can only do it with the aid of Level 9 spells: Timestop and Shapechange. Cast Shapechange, attack him, RUN and use your party members to distract Arkanis, then stop time. Change into a mind flayer and suck his little brains out. Then reload, because there's no way to finish the game now.

First off: Renal (and Aran) can be pickpocketed. You just need a really, really high score for it, because there's no way that just any old schmoe could walk up to these guys and start rummaging through their pockets.
Second: You only need worry about Arkanis Gath if you've already sided with the Thieves. So Renal can be whacked before siding with Bodhi (or even after siding with Bodhi, if you choose her evil path) without requiring Level 9 spells or screwing your game beyond repair.
