Why are you bumping up threads from 18 months ago, and answering them like they were posted yesterday?

But there is no magic in BG2 or in any CRPG for that matter, because magic is...well magical, but RPG spells are...well statistical. Whether you bludgeon you foe to death with a 2D4 Club or blast him with a 6D6 meteor, all you've done is overwhelm your opponent with statistics. And you thought that math wasn't important in school.

And magical weapons, shmeapons. Dagger, dagger +1. Oooh, that's a great magic. Add a one to all your statistics.

There just ain't no magic in them there hills.

I daresay Yorick is completely wrong. Magic does not suck. Priests can cast spells. If he cannot understand it, he can call the priest spells miracles or prayers and the priest's spellbook a holy book. How do the people in Faerun die? Is it important? Don't let us be too materialistic in the fantasy world. Bards cannot cast spells? And why not! Let us remember TES Daggerfall where ANY class was able of magic to some extent. Is it wrong? Why?
The fantasy world is different from our world and it is good that it is. Sometimes, the computer games are flamed by some mentors that they bring brutality, that they cause murders in schools and so on. When could this flaming have some substance? If we kill people with machine guns in a contemporary city in the game. If we drive cars. If we do similar things. In the other words, if the game reflects OUR world, if the monsters CAN be identified with people around us. If the monsters are serviced by means of tools that EXIST around us. Isn't it better to fight with magical weapons? Isn't it better to cast spells? I think it is. The further is the game world from our world the better.
A good game should always be a fairy tale. It should never resemble a possible episode of our life. Every fairy tale is full of magical artifacts and magical effects.

playing a mage or sorcerer is cool
magic is part of the forgottten realms
if you want to fight too why not dual class
a swashbuckler with a mage with cloak/ring of protection
you can use cool spells and even
send him in for a fight(my swashbuckler/mage
lvl 10/11 had an ac -5 after a couple of chapter 2 quests)
if i want to melee combat i just use another member
of my party
but without magic bg would be boring
(many good figths are against mages, Jon is a mage
Firkraag uses magic many creatures would not
exist or be as powerfulas they are without magic)
so it shouldn't be banned

if you don't like magic just don't use it and enjoy
killing a powerful wizard

Yorick, if every creature in BG2 that had something to do with magic died, almost everyone in the game would be dead. Every class deals with magic. EVERY class. And, if there was no magic in BG2 the only thing you could possibly be is a peasant or something. That's really fun. If there was no magic in the game, it would be too much like real life. And real life is right there, why play a game to simulate it, you know?

Guys, Yorick hasn't been to this forum in over a YEAR, so it's pointless addressing what he said. *sigh* PLEASE stop bumping threads that have been inactive for over 18 months. Memnoch has already warned you about this.

I'm locking this to avoid further confusion.

-Sazerac

P.S. Unlocking again so that Yorick can come in and make a rebuttal. "S"
