HI Epona!

No, I can't recall ever seeing you respond to someone in a nasty way! I don't think I've ever seen you use sarcasm to cut someone down just because you had an opposing view. In fact, I've always thought you were pretty funny and witty with your responses to things! (and usually with some twist of insight that would never occur to me!)

Besides, I really do think that sarcasm in general was never the issue, belittling other posters to the point where they no longer feel they can continue posting and in some cases leave not only the War Forum, but IW, because of it is the issue. Making a hostile atmosphere that mods have to wade through to put out fires all the time is the problem Mems and Z bring up as well. The mods and Z get so much mail on this they have trouble keeping up with things. One mod left this area altogether and another won't even read here so you know it's got to be considered unpleasant in as well as time consuming.

I never claimed nor sought equality with God, and he's talking about something totally different.

Also, water at room temperature is much better for you than ice cold water.

Red wine should be drunk at room temperature too. Jesus drank wine (since you're into biblical justification. Odd seeing as you're an athiest..... )

Just remember you chose this analogy.

Responding to several people at once here!!

SC - how are you? I've been about, but you know how things are, I swing between 20 posts a week and 20 posts an hour What with all the antiwar activities I am doing (oh god, the endless meetings I have been going to)!! I'm going to add that motto to my sig too, good idea

Cloudy - you are so sweet to say that, thank you so much, but I know I am no angel.

Ziroc - That's good, thanks for clarifying. Life without sarcasm - Mmmm, I couldn't get through the day!

Seems to be now the view is sarcasm is ok as long as not directed at people. But what I said that started all this fuss *wasn't* directed at Hiram personally!! Goddamn it, I like Hiram! We've interacted on AIM and I think he's a lovely guy.....

SC, I will try to explain as I can see it does really upset you.

This may be one of those cases where it would have been the better course to not have made the wisecrack at all. It did effect him personally and I understand you know a bit about his family and his sister so this should make sense.

What you may not have even thought about when making the sarcastic remark about the poor (and the system) in America is that they have been struggling for a while to find ways to pay those medical bills and I suspect your comment came across as a huge slap in his face.

His first post on the War forum clearly stated he'd not done so before and it wasn't his usual type of post. I'd see that as a red flag.. calling for caution in any 'heated' debate since one couldn't know how he'd deal with it! Sure you can trade barbs with Ronn or others because you DO know how they react under fire. But it's that type of thread that keeps people like Hiram from posting and when they do venture into the shark-infested waters they don't usually come with a stun gun in hand. So maybe the answer for everyone is to treat those whose tolerance for stinging comments is unknown with extra respect to begin with.

Errrrmmm..... Ziroc..... er... most sarcasm is directed towards someone or what someone said.....
If both parties are amicable it doesn't really matter much.... seems to me it is only bad when there is animosity between the posters and the sarcasm is deliberately nasty.
Gosh - its a minefield, isn't it? And SO difficult to be a Mod, because you need to read a lot of stuff that just doesn't interest you to see if it is friendly or not...... I would hate the job!

Could you appoint some more Mods just for this forum so that too much doesn't rest on Memnoch and you? I think he is feeling very pressured at the moment. Most other forums have 3 or 4 Mods, this one only has 2, and it is the hardest to look after.

I hope you don't take it down, though. It would mean a lot of stuff would just get posted in GD and the idea of this one was to keep it out of there..... I KNOW it isn't easy for you, and this is a great forum due to you and your excellent Moderators. I do feel, though, that more Mods in here would help matters and take the pressure off the two of you. You really need someone else in Australia or the East....

I for one gathered that.

The post of mine that Saz chastised me for was totally sarcastic.

It is the same post brought up frequently by those now anti-no sarcasm.

It would seem on one hand you are agreed with, yet on the other disagreed with, for exactly the same policy, by the same people.....

Most odd.

I think you and the place rocks Dan, and think as ever you're doing a great job.

If it makes it easier for you I'll gladly voluntarily buzz off, even for a while - as I love the place too much to see it descend into squabbles because of percieved injustices.

However, I love contributing here, and until I hear otherwise, will post till the cows come home.

Thanks for your words about my G/dad. Thinking of you with all your "stuff" too mate.

LOL..neither am I! But you do practice a goodly amount of 'do unto others..." and I appreciate that!

Good for you, with the meetings and all! (well, maybe they are tedious, I hope not!) I may not always agree with everyone's politics, but I really like to see someone with strong convictions act on them in positive ways! So bravo! or wait.. should that be bravA? Cloudy, it was *not* a sarcastic remark about the poor. It was totally a sarcastic remark about the system, which it sounds like Hiram's family has come up against.

I think the point you make here is very valid, thanks for bringing it up. It hadn't occured to me, for the simple reason that in Britain there would have been no medical bills to pay, as care would have been given under the National Health System.
