one of my friends who completed it said they were cowled wizards who all along had worshipped bhaal, does that make sense?

I always assumed the creatures that attacked Irenicus were demonic kobolds.. They have the tails, they're about the right size, and they travel in hordes.

No, kobolds are pretty small, smaller than humans and those were the size of irenicus
