My first character in BG1 was a ranger, IIRC. But I never finished the game with him because my videocard wasn't compatible with my motherboard back then and the game(s) crashed like every fifteen minutes. I just recently played BG1 through first time, as a fighter.
In BG2 my first character was a Cavalier. Eventually I took him all the way through ToB. Man.. Cavaliers just rock!

first BG1 start was a halfling thief
first (and only) BG1 finish was an elven solo F/M/T first party BG1 finish will be a druid with SoA in mind first SOA start was an archer like a few have said - attractive class description i guess - i still quite fancy all the ranger kits in SoA actually |

Bg2: Human barbarian single wielding a warhammer. his name was wulfgar(was i reading Salvatore books...why yes i was  ).

I played as an elf in BG1 and exported my player to BG2 so that I have the same one (Legolas, an elf fighter/archer).

First time through BG2 was a human Barbarian named Conan (don't laugh). I didn't really understand the AD&D rules at first, so his stats were completely lame and unbalanced!
The barbarian continues to be one of my favourite classes to this day. |

Cavalier. With Valygar's portrait, no less! Ah, the joys of being a newbie. Now, I would consider a Cavalier with Long Swords and Shields a challenge game.
Never actually finished that game.

first BG class was a dwarven cleric (after my first PnP character)
first bg2 character was the paladin i finished bg1 with and converted to cavalier.
